Music video analysis

Emeli Sande-Heaven

Will you recognize me

In the flashing light?
-This could suggest that everyone pays attention and cares about  her only because she is famous and that they wont care about her if she wasn't. 'Flashing light' could suggest her in the flashing lights of the paparazzi cameras.

I try to keep my heart beat
But I can't get it right

-this could suggest that she is trying to push forward and not give up on her life and keep her mental state at a good level. However her saying 'but cant get it right' could mean that she cant stay happy due to all the bad things happening in her life and the world.

Will you recognize me
When I'm lying on my back?

-She is asking if her fans will still support her if her life goes to rock bottom and in need of moral support. 'When i'm lying on my back' this line is implying when she is in a bad part of her life on her back and cannot get up just like the struggle of a turtle on their back.

These are some examples of the meaning of the lyrics in her song however the visuals also provide us with a deeper meaning of what the song is about.

The beginning of the music video shows a few shots of troubled people. the people in these shots look very melancholy, and depressing which is the reason why you can interpret that these people are in need of help and have a very unstable life. The video uses lighting very well. in the beginning they use side lighting on the close up of a man which gives of that melancholy vibe. They also use a shaded light on another man who appears to be dirty with a mixture of appearance and lighting we can see this man is most likely homeless. Emeli Sande is illuminated with a sort of golden light. In the video we see her looking over the people in need and by the end of the song the dark clouds open up and we see the light shine through the gap and onto the once melancholy streets.

People

This Person is presented as a person who has problems and who is potentially homeless. The lighting used in this shot is very bland and creates the impression that the day is very bleak and cloudy. The man has a very dirty face and his facial expressions are very miserable. All these factors show off the impression that this man is homeless and is in a terrible mood.

In the beginning of the video we see this certain character looking depressed and ashamed of himself. He was shown as depressed in the beginning of the video with the dark lighting and the body language however later in the video we see the light shine on him as he embraces it.

Emeli Sande music video for Heaven used a lot of camera effects and make-up in order to make the video present what the song represents. the video has many ways of showing the depression. For example the side lighting used in this video could potentially show he has a dark side, full of depression and anger etc, and a light side, which could represent his hope.

location

The location of this video is a big part when sending a message to the viewer. The location is used in this song very well in order to express the theme and feelings of the song. In this case they have used the location to express a somber atmosphere early in the song, they did this by editing the video to make it look like a gloomy, cloudy, gray day which projects the image of the people having a depressing time. they also recorded the video on the streets and alleyways to give that impression of the participants in the video to be poor and or homeless. later on the video changes and the sun breaks through the clouds and this will project a view on the viewers that the feeling is now warm, bright and overall happy.

Target audience

This song/music video appeals to anyone dealing with problems in the world. this song speaks the truth of the world and will appeal to people with problems as the people in the song deal with the problems and embrace the sun coming through the clouds. The message also appeals to troubled people as the music video is all about being in the darkness and then the light of the sun breaks through the clouds.

The video is aimed at a young audience. This is because it teaches people about how tough life is once you get older and this is showing an example to younger people about what to look out for, and that life gets better.
