HIP HOP Genre analysis

Hip Hop
Hip Hop is a genre that is nowadays a watered down gangsta rap. It has all the parts of gangsta rap like chains, the clothes and just the style in general, however it does not talk about murder and crime that much. Honestly most of the famous Hip Hop videos are to do with love, peace and less about violence and being a criminal.

For example one of the most famous Hip Hop is I'll be missing you by P. Diddy and Faith Evans. This is a song about Faith Evans (Biggie smalls' wife) and P. Diddy (Biggie smalls' best friend) mourning Biggie smalls. In the video they have all chains, leather jackets, glasses and motorbikes which show the Hip Hop presence in the video. These are things that I will need to cross over to my music video to ensure that it looks like a Hip Hop video.

Lighting

Hip Hop uses various types of lighting to create different vibes in the video. different lighting is used depending on the theme of the video. Some of the songs are used to portray the music artist as an intimidating individual. The lighting used for this is usually dark lighting, mostly recorded at night, which gives the video an intimidating theme. darkness is related to staying up late which is seen as antisocial behavior. Also mythical creatures like zombies and vampires have a strong connection to darkness and night making us scared of the dark as a small child and always seeing night as a dangerous time. Another point is when someone is an evil or scary person we see them as having a dark or black heart, which also adds to the view of seeing darkness as intimidating. They sometimes pick a dark area, like a street corner or warehouse, and use a small amount of light to create side lighting. Side lighting is when light is showing on one side of something and the other side is darkness. this works really well on someones face and can be used to show someone as mysterious or dangerous. This is an example...

Another popular type of lighting used is full on frontal lighting. This is usually used in love songs or a song where the person is bragging about themselves. the lighting is used almost as a spotlight and gives full attention on a desired subject. For a bragging video the light will usually be on him and or whatever he is talking about, this is so the attention is all on them and they can show off. for example if they are next to an expensive car all of the light will be on them and their car. This is a good example of them showing off their chains etc...

This is a great example of someone having a spotlight on them...

Camera angles
A very common angle in Hip Hop is when the camera is on the ground and is looking up at the rappers. The rappers then usually show off their bling (jewelry) and throw hand sighs in an attempt to intimidate others. they look down on the camera to portray them as powerful beings that tower over everyone, so whoever watches the video is being towered over. here are some examples..

Example 1

Example 2

Location
In Hip Hop the music videos are filmed on a variety of places from mansions in daylight, so they can have the correct lighting to show their riches...

to filming on the streets at night to increase intimidation and try and show off their culture of 'hip hop', however, this is more of a variation of hip hop known as gangsta rap

Body Language
The body language in Hip Hop is very extravagant as the express all the emotions, be it anger, love, happiness and so on. They will also often use signs in order to represent something like a gang or hometown etc. A Good example of this is the famous west-side sign.

The sign represents west coast rap and everyone who is from the west side will throw this sign up. this is an iconic sign and today people will still use this sign, not just in the west coast.

Style
style is one of, if not the most important part of belonging in the hip hop culture. style has changed over the years of hip hop from wearing flashy colorful clothes that were worn by icons like LL Cool J in the 1980s, the more dark and intimidating style that NWA rocked in the 90s during the gangsta rap era and since 2000s the fashion sense in hip hop changes and changes from each artist. Although there is no fixed clothing hip hop artists there is something that creates the style and that is chains. Chains are what make up the hip hop style culture and there are some over the top chains nowadays.
